Thailand's official national lottery is drawn twice a month. It is one of only two forms of legal gambling in the country. Another legal gambling option is horse racing in Bangkok. The official national lottery is administered by the Government Lottery Office. The draw is held on the first and sixteenth of each month.

To claim the prize, lottery winners need to present their winning ticket, a claim form, and their Thai ID card or passport. They must also pay stamp duty, which is 0.5% on government or charitable winnings and 1% on other prizes. All prizes and winnings must be claimed within two years of the draw date.

The lottery is controversial, as it is seen by many as a symbol of political corruption. In 1973, activists set fire to the GLO building in protest at the use of lottery profits by dictators. In another case, a politically active monk, Luang Pu Buddha Issara, led a demonstration of farmers who demanded that the government use lottery profits to pay farmers.

There are over 35,000 lottery vendors registered in Thailand. Around 15,000 are based in Bangkok and the rest are located in the provinces. The lottery is broadcast live on television and online. It is recommended that you purchase lottery tickets from a vendor who is at least 20 years old. The official legal price for a single lottery ticket is 80 baht.
